Why shouldn’t you play with your navel?

Answered by Tom Adger

There are several reasons why playing with your navel is not a good idea. Firstly, it can lead to an infection. Let me share a personal experience to illustrate this risk. A few years ago, I was bored and absentmindedly started poking and prodding my bellybutton. Little did I know that this seemingly harmless act could have serious consequences.

As I continued to play with my navel, I inadvertently introduced bacteria into the area. Our bellybuttons are warm and moist, providing the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to thrive. The constant touching and poking can create tiny wounds, allowing bacteria to enter the body and cause an infection.

In my case, I ended up with a red, swollen bellybutton that was incredibly painful. I had developed an infection known as omphalitis. It required medical intervention, including antibiotics and regular cleaning of the area. Trust me, it was not a pleasant experience, and I learned my lesson the hard way.

To prevent such infections, it is crucial to keep your hands clean and dry. This means washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your bellybutton. It is also essential to dry your hands properly before coming into contact with your navel. Moisture can create a breeding ground for bacteria, so keeping your hands dry is vital.

Additionally, it is advisable to avoid excessive poking or prodding of your bellybutton. While it may be tempting to play with it, especially when bored or idle, it is better to find a different activity to occupy your hands.

Playing with your navel can lead to an infection due to the introduction of bacteria into the area. It is important to keep your hands clean and dry to prevent any potential risks. So, the next time you feel the urge to play with your bellybutton, remember the potential consequences and find a different way to entertain yourself. Stay hygienic and keep your navel safe!
