Dung beetles, also known as scarab beetles, hold the title for the strongest animal in the world when it comes to their incredible strength-to-body-weight ratio. These beetles may not be the largest or most intimidating creatures, but they possess an astonishing ability to pull or push objects that are many times their own weight.
I had the opportunity to witness the strength of a dung beetle firsthand during a visit to a wildlife reserve. As I observed a dung beetle going about its daily activities, I was amazed by its ability to move a ball of dung that seemed much larger than its own body. This made me curious to learn more about these remarkable creatures and their extraordinary strength.
Dung beetles belong to the family Scarabaeidae, and they play a vital role in ecosystems by removing and recycling animal waste. They are found in various regions across the world, including Africa, Asia, and the Americas. While there are many species of dung beetles, they all share a common characteristic – their impressive strength.
To understand the true strength of a dung beetle, it is important to consider their size. These insects typically range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in length. Despite their small stature, they are capable of moving objects that are up to 1,141 times their own body weight. This means that if a human possessed the same strength-to-body-weight ratio as a dung beetle, they would be able to pull many times their own weight, possibly even a small car!
The strength of dung beetles is most evident in their ability to move balls of dung, which serve as a source of food and a place to lay their eggs. When a dung beetle encounters a pile of dung, it quickly assesses the situation and forms a ball by rolling the dung with its hind legs. This ball can be several times the size of the beetle itself.
Once the ball is formed, the dung beetle uses its front legs to navigate and guide the ball in a straight line. This process requires immense strength and coordination, as the beetle must overcome various obstacles in its path, such as rocks or uneven terrain. Remarkably, dung beetles are even capable of climbing vertically up inclines while pushing their dung balls.
The strength of dung beetles is not solely derived from their physical abilities. These insects also possess specialized features that enhance their strength. For instance, they have strong exoskeletons that provide support and protection. Additionally, their muscles are highly developed, allowing them to exert tremendous force.

Their ability to move objects that are over a thousand times their own weight is truly remarkable. Observing these insects in action and learning about their incredible strength has given me a newfound appreciation for the diversity and abilities of the animal kingdom.
