When should you not take Theraflu?

Answered by Stephen Mosley

Theraflu is a cold medicine that is commonly used to relieve symptoms such as nasal congestion, cough, headache, and fever. However, there are certain situations where you should not take Theraflu. It is important to note that I am not a doctor, so you should always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication.

Firstly, if you have had an allergic reaction to any type of cold medicine in the past, it is best to avoid taking Theraflu. Allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms such as a rash or itching to more severe reactions like difficulty breathing or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you have experienced an allergic reaction in the past, it is best to speak with your doctor before considering Theraflu or any other cold medicine.

Additionally, if you have severe high blood pressure or coronary artery disease, it is not recommended to take Theraflu. Theraflu contains ingredients that can increase blood pressure and heart rate, which can be dangerous for individuals with these conditions. It is important to discuss alternative treatment options with your doctor if you have these conditions.

Furthermore, Theraflu should not be taken if you have taken a type of medication called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past 14 days. MAOIs are used to treat conditions such as depression and anxiety. Taking Theraflu while on an MAOI can lead to a potentially dangerous increase in blood pressure, known as a hypertensive crisis. Examples of MAOIs include Eldepryl®, Marplan®, Nardil®, and Parnate®. It is important to inform your doctor if you are taking any medications before considering Theraflu or any other cold medicine.
