What did Simon call Jesus?

Answered by Willian Lymon

When I think about Simon and his encounter with Jesus, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. Simon, also known as Peter, was a fisherman by trade. He spent his days out on the sea, casting his nets and hoping for a good catch. But little did he know that his life was about to change forever.

One day, Jesus came to the shore where Simon and his fellow fishermen were cleaning their nets. The crowd had gathered around Jesus, eager to hear His teachings. Jesus noticed Simon’s boat and asked if He could use it to teach the people. Simon willingly obliged and pushed the boat out into the water.

As Jesus finished speaking, He turned to Simon and told him to go out into the deep water and let down his nets for a catch. Simon, tired and probably a bit skeptical, responded by saying, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing. Nevertheless, at Your word, I will let down the net.”

Simon’s obedience paid off in a big way. When he let down the net, it was filled to the brim with fish. So many fish, in fact, that the net began to break and Simon had to call for help from his partners in the other boat. They came and together they filled both boats to the point of nearly sinking.

It was in that moment, as Simon witnessed the miraculous catch of fish, that he began to realize who Jesus truly was. He fell down at Jesus’ knees and said, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!” Simon had gone from calling Jesus “Master” to recognizing Him as “Lord.” He understood that Jesus was not just a teacher or a prophet, but the Son of God.

This encounter with Jesus was a turning point in Simon’s life. From that day forward, he left everything behind to follow Jesus. He became one of Jesus’ closest disciples and played a crucial role in spreading the message of the Gospel. Simon’s faith in Jesus grew stronger as he witnessed countless miracles and experienced firsthand the power and love of God.

In my own life, I can relate to Simon’s journey of faith. There have been moments where I have doubted and questioned, but when I choose to trust and obey, I have seen God work in incredible ways. Just like Simon, I have come to know Jesus as not just a teacher or a good man, but as my Lord and Savior.

Simon’s story reminds me that Jesus calls us to step out in faith, even when things seem impossible. It is through our obedience and surrender that we can experience the fullness of who Jesus is and the abundant life He offers. I am grateful for Simon’s example and the reminder that Jesus is not just a figure from history, but a living and active presence in my life today.
