He was also well-known for his many affairs with women from all walks of life; it was during one such affair that Nymeria Sand was conceived.
Nymeria’s mother is unknown to this day; some say she hailed from the Free City of Volantis but no one knows for certain. With her father already having eight recognized children with his legal wife, Ellaria Sand, Nymeria was born out of wedlock and thus did not have any rights as a member of House Martell or access to the wealth and resources that come with it.
Though Oberyn never publicly acknowledged Nymeria as his daughter, he did provide her with an education in both martial arts and tradecraft; skills which she put to good use during her lifetime. Unfortunately, Oberyn was killed by Gregor Clegane during a trial by combat in King’s Landing before he could legitimize her status as his daughter or arrange a marriage for her.
Without any legal protection or family ties to protect her, Nymeria faced a hard road ahead. She eventually found solace in a band of sellswords known as The Company Of The Cat – where she became known as Lady Nym – who accepted her without question despite her illegitimate birthright.
