Are ear hematomas painful in dogs?

Answered by Michael Wilson

Ear hematomas can be very painful for dogs. I have seen this firsthand with my own dog. It was a distressing experience to see my furry friend in so much discomfort. The pain can cause them to constantly scratch or shake their head, trying to find relief from the pressure and inflammation caused by the collection of blood in the ear flap.

If left untreated, the pain and discomfort can worsen. The pressure from the hematoma can lead to further damage to the surrounding tissues in the ear. This can result in a distorted appearance of the ear, often described as a cauliflower-shaped ear. Not only does this affect the aesthetic appearance of the dog’s ear, but it can also lead to complications.

The distorted, swollen ear can obstruct the ear canal, making it difficult for the dog to hear properly. This can impact their quality of life and ability to communicate with their surroundings. Additionally, the inflammation and damage to the tissues can increase the risk of ear infections, further exacerbating the discomfort and pain for the dog.

It’s important to treat ear hematomas promptly to alleviate the pain and prevent further complications. The most common treatment option is surgical drainage of the hematoma, which involves making an incision in the ear flap to remove the accumulated blood and allow the ear to heal properly. In some cases, a veterinarian may also recommend using medications to reduce inflammation and manage pain.

I cannot stress enough the importance of seeking veterinary care if you suspect your dog has an ear hematoma. While some may argue that the hematoma can eventually be reabsorbed by the body, the associated inflammation and potential complications make it imperative to address the issue promptly. The well-being and comfort of our furry companions should always be a priority, and treating ear hematomas is no exception.
