Why not to get a Saluki?

Answered by Jeremy Urbaniak

There are several reasons why getting a Saluki may not be the best choice for everyone. First and foremost, Salukis are known for being challenging to train. They are an independent and intelligent breed, which can make them quite stubborn and resistant to traditional training methods. This means that you will need to be patient, consistent, and creative in your training approach.

Another factor to consider is the grooming requirements of a Saluki. While their short, silky coat may seem low maintenance, they actually have a tendency to shed quite a bit. Regular brushing is necessary to prevent matting and keep their coat looking its best. Additionally, their ears are prone to infections, so regular cleaning and inspection is important.

Salukis are also not well-suited for apartment living. They are an active and athletic breed that requires plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Without enough space to run and play, they can become bored and even destructive. Ideally, they should have access to a large, securely fenced yard where they can roam and stretch their legs.

Furthermore, Salukis have a strong prey drive. This means that they have a natural instinct to chase and potentially harm smaller animals, such as squirrels or cats. If left off-leash or in an unfenced area, they are likely to take off after any small creature they spot. This can be dangerous for both the Saluki and the potential prey, not to mention the stress it can cause the owner.

Additionally, Salukis are not typically recommended for people who work long hours or need to leave their dog alone for extended periods of time. These dogs thrive on human companionship and can become anxious or depressed when left alone for too long. They need social interaction and mental stimulation to be happy and well-adjusted.

While Salukis are beautiful and elegant dogs, they require a specific type of owner and environment to thrive. If you are willing to put in the time and effort to train and exercise them properly, as well as provide a suitable living situation, they can make wonderful companions. However, for those who are not prepared for the challenges that come with owning a Saluki, it may be best to consider a different breed.
