Why does Allah want us to do Hajj?

Answered by Stephen Mosley

Allah, the Most Merciful and Wise, has prescribed Hajj as one of the pillars of Islam for the benefit of believers. The pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca is not just a physical journey, but a spiritual one as well. It holds great significance in the life of a Muslim, as it is an opportunity to purify oneself, seek forgiveness, and earn immense rewards.

One of the reasons why Allah wants us to perform Hajj is to cleanse ourselves of sins. The rituals performed during Hajj are symbolic acts of devotion and obedience to Allah. They serve as a means to wash away our sins and seek forgiveness for past transgressions. The physical exertion and the hardship endured during Hajj remind us of the struggles and trials we face in life, encouraging us to reflect upon our actions and seek repentance. By sincerely repenting and seeking forgiveness, we can purify our hearts and souls, and start afresh with a clean slate.

Hajj also serves as a reminder to detach ourselves from worldly possessions and desires. Islam teaches us the importance of moderation and self-control. The journey of Hajj requires believers to leave behind their homes, families, and material comforts, and focus solely on worshipping Allah. This detachment from worldly attachments helps us realize that true success lies not in accumulating wealth or possessions, but in seeking the pleasure of Allah and striving for righteousness.

Furthermore, Hajj fosters a sense of unity and equality among Muslims. Regardless of their social status, nationality, or background, all pilgrims stand side by side, dressed in simple white garments, performing the same rituals. This emphasis on equality reminds us that in the eyes of Allah, we are all equal and that our worth is determined by our piety and deeds. This sense of unity and brotherhood encourages us to treat one another with kindness, compassion, and fairness, fostering a harmonious society.

Hajj also serves as a means of testing and strengthening our faith. The journey itself is physically demanding, requiring endurance and perseverance. It tests our patience, resilience, and dedication to fulfilling the command of Allah. Through the challenges faced during Hajj, we learn to rely on Allah, trust in His guidance, and seek His assistance. This strengthens our faith and deepens our connection with our Creator.

In addition to these spiritual benefits, performing Hajj also carries immense rewards in the Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not engage in any obscenity or wrongdoing will return (free from sins) as on the day his mother gave birth to him” (Sahih Bukhari). This shows the magnitude of the blessings and forgiveness that await those who perform Hajj with sincerity and purity of intention.

Allah wants us to perform Hajj as a means of purifying ourselves, seeking forgiveness, detaching from worldly desires, fostering unity, and strengthening our faith. It is a transformative journey that helps us reflect upon our lives, seek repentance, and strive for righteousness. By fulfilling this obligation, we not only attain spiritual purification but also earn immense rewards in the Hereafter. May Allah grant us all the opportunity to perform Hajj and accept our worship.
