What do you share in devotion?

Answered by Stephen Mosley

In a devotional, I strive to share my heart and reveal the thoughts that I have related to the biblical text. The purpose of a devotional is to encourage and inspire the church congregation, so it is important to choose Bible scriptures that they can relate to and that have a message of hope, love, and faith.

When preparing a devotional, I first spend time studying and meditating on the chosen scripture. I read it in different translations to gain a deeper understanding and look for any cross-references that can provide additional insights. I also consider the historical and cultural context in which the scripture was written, as it helps to bring out the full meaning and relevance for our lives today.

Once I have a good grasp of the scripture, I then reflect on how it applies to my own life. I ask myself questions like, “How does this scripture speak to my current circumstances?” or “What lessons can I learn from this passage?” I believe that personal experiences and situations can greatly enhance the impact of a devotional, so I try to incorporate them whenever possible.

In sharing the devotional, I aim to be as explicit as possible and avoid repetition by using synonyms to convey my thoughts effectively. I want to present my thoughts in a way that resonates with the congregation, so I focus on being relatable and authentic. By sharing my own struggles, triumphs, and journey of faith, I hope to create a connection with the listeners and show that we are all on this spiritual journey together.

I find it helpful to structure the devotional with paragraph headings and subtitles when necessary. This helps to break up the content and make it easier for the listeners to follow along. Additionally, I may use bullet lists to provide practical applications or action steps that can be taken based on the scripture.

Ultimately, in a devotional, I aim to convey a message of hope, encouragement, and inspiration based on the chosen scripture. I want to leave the congregation with a renewed sense of faith and a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace. By sharing my heart and revealing my thoughts related to the biblical text, I hope to create a meaningful and impactful devotional experience for all who are present.
