River Raids is not a main quest in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, but rather a gameplay mode introduced in update 1.1. It is a free content addition that focuses on the raiding mechanic that is present in the main story.
When I first heard about River Raids, I was excited to try it out as I had thoroughly enjoyed raiding settlements in the main game. This new mode allows players to embark on raids in unexplored areas of England and gather resources to improve their settlement.
One of the things I appreciate about River Raids is that it offers a different experience from the main questline. While the main story focuses on Eivor’s journey and the conflicts between the Saxons and the Vikings, River Raids provide a more open-ended and repetitive gameplay loop.
In River Raids, players can use their longship to sail along rivers, exploring new locations and raiding enemy encampments. The goal is to gather supplies, including foreign cargo, raw materials, and even new weapons and armor. The resources obtained can be used to upgrade your settlement and unlock new features and buildings.
What I like about this mode is that it adds more depth to the raiding mechanic. In the main quest, raiding settlements was necessary to progress the story and gain resources, but it felt more limited in scope. River Raids allow for more freedom and exploration, as you can choose which rivers to sail and which locations to raid.
Another aspect that sets River Raids apart from the main quest is the introduction of Jomsvikings. These are customizable Viking warriors that can be recruited and brought along on your raids. It adds a new layer of strategy to the gameplay, as you can select the Jomsvikings with different abilities and gear to complement your playstyle.
I must admit that while I enjoyed the new gameplay mode, I did find it to be somewhat repetitive after a while. The locations and enemies tend to feel similar, and the objectives are often the same – raid, gather resources, repeat. However, if you enjoy the raiding mechanic in the main game, River Raids can offer a fresh take on it and provide additional content to explore.
To summarize, River Raids is not a main quest in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. It is a free content addition introduced in update 1.1 that focuses on the raiding mechanic present in the main story. While it offers a different and more open-ended experience, it can also become repetitive over time. Nonetheless, if you enjoy raiding settlements and exploring new areas, River Raids can provide additional gameplay and resources for your settlement in the game.
