How do you skew a picture?

Answered by Douglas Hiatt

To skew an image or selection, there are several methods you can use depending on the software you are using. I will explain three common methods: using the Skew option in the Edit menu, using the Free Transform tool, and using the Transform tool (specifically the Vanishing Point feature).

1. Skew option in the Edit menu:
A. Open your image or make a selection that you want to skew.
B. Go to the Edit menu and look for the Transform or Transformations submenu.
C. Within this submenu, you should find an option called Skew. Select it.
D. A bounding box will appear around your image or selection, with anchor points at the corners and midpoints of each side.
E. Click and drag any of these anchor points to skew the image or selection. You can skew horizontally, vertically, or at an angle depending on the direction you drag the anchor points.
F. Once you are satisfied with the skew, press Enter or click outside the bounding box to apply the transformation.

2. Free Transform tool:
A. Open your image or make a selection.
B. Look for the Free Transform tool, usually found under the Edit or Transform menu. It is often represented by a bounding box with handles at the corners and sides.
C. Click and drag any of the corner handles to skew the image or selection. You can also use the handles on the sides to skew in a specific direction.
D. Hold the Shift key while dragging to constrain the skew to a single axis (horizontal or vertical).
E. Release the mouse button and adjust the skew until you achieve the desired effect.
F. Press Enter or click outside the bounding box to apply the transformation.

3. Transform tool (Vanishing Point):
A. This method is specific to software like Adobe Photoshop that has the Vanishing Point feature.
B. Open the Vanishing Point tool from the Filter menu (or wherever it is located in your software).
C. In the Vanishing Point window, draw a grid or define the perspective planes by clicking on the corners of objects in your image that should have parallel lines.
D. Select the Create Plane tool and draw a shape over the area you want to skew. This shape should align with the perspective planes you defined.
E. Once the shape is created, go to the Edit menu and choose Free Transform.
F. Click and drag any of the corner handles to skew the selected area within the shape. The skew will follow the perspective defined by the Vanishing Point grid.
G. Press Enter or click outside the shape to apply the transformation.

Remember to save your work before applying any transformations to ensure you can revert back if needed. Experiment with different methods and adjust the skew until you achieve the desired result.
