Born Cornelius Crane Chase on October 8th, 1943 in Woodstock, New York, Chavy grew up in a family of performers. His father was a writer and editor for magazines such as The New Yorker and Vogue. His mother was an actress and dancer. As the only child of divorcee parents, Chavy moved back and forth between his mother’s home in Woodstock and his father’s home in Manhattan during his childhood.
Chavy began performing himself at an early age; he attended Riverdale Country School in New York City where he sang in the school choir as well as performed improvisational comedy with friends. After graduating from high school in 1961, Chavy enrolled at Bard College but left after a year to pursue acting full time.
He got his start as an ensemble member of Second City improv group in Chicago where he developed many of the characters that became famous during his career: Irwin Mainway (host of “Consumer Probe”), Pete Stangle (the hippie who never understood anything), and Tyrone Fingers (the smooth talking hustler).
After Second City closed down, Chavy moved to Los Angeles to pursue film work. In 1978 he starred alongside Chevy Chase (his namesake) as Ty Webb in the golf movie classic “Caddyshack”. This role would become one of Chase’s most iconic characters—Ty Webb’s philosophy on life “Be the ball” is still quoted by fans today!
Chase followed up Caddyshack with other successful films such as National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) which featured him alongside Beverly D’Angelo and Randy Quaid; Fletch (1985) which saw him playing the titular character; Three Amigos! (1986); The Great Outdoors (1988); Spies Like Us (1985); Nothing But Trouble(1991); Cops & Robbersons(1994); Man Of The House (1995); Vegas Vacation(1997)and others. Throughout this period he also starred on Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1976 and then again between 1986–1994 winning two Emmy awards for outstanding writing while on SNL.
In addition to acting, Chavy released three studio albums featuring some of his original songs such as “The Chevy Chase Theme” from National Lampoon’s Vacation which won him a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1987. He also wrote music for films such as “Walk Don’t Run” from Three Amigos!.
More recently Chavy has been seen guest starring on various television shows including Law & Order: SVU, Parks & Recreation, Hot In Cleveland and Community where he appeared alongside fellow former SNL castmates Joel McHale and Donald Glover . He most recently hosted Saturday Night Live for its 40th anniversary special episode in February 2015 making him one of only five actors/actresses to ever host SNL seven times or more!
In 2019 Chavy was honored with a star on Hollywood Walk Of Fame located outside Grauman’s Chinese Theater near other iconic actors such as Mel Brooks and Steve Martin who were both present during the ceremony celebrating Chavy’s achievements throughout his career!
