Can we sleep after Fajr before sunrise?

Answered by Cody Janus

Sleeping straight after Fajr prayer is permissible in Islam. However, it is highly recommended to stay awake until sunrise, engaging in activities that are pleasing to Allah. While it is understandable that one may feel tired and in need of rest after waking up early for Fajr prayer, there are several reasons why it is encouraged to utilize this time before sunrise.

Firstly, this time period between Fajr and sunrise is considered to be a blessed and spiritually rewarding time. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun rises, then prays two units of prayer, will have the reward of Hajj and Umrah complete, complete, complete.” (Tirmidhi) This hadith emphasizes the immense rewards that can be attained by dedicating this time to the remembrance of Allah.

Moreover, this pre-sunrise time is ideal for recitation of the Qur’an. The tranquility and peace during these early hours allow for a focused and undisturbed connection with the words of Allah. It is a time when the heart and mind are more receptive to understanding and reflecting upon the teachings of the Qur’an. Engaging in recitation and reflection during this time can bring immense spiritual growth and nourishment to the soul.

In addition to recitation, engaging in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) during this time is also highly recommended. Dhikr can take various forms, such as repeating the names of Allah, seeking forgiveness, or praising Him. This period before sunrise provides an opportunity to engage in these acts of worship, which not only bring peace and contentment to the heart but also earn plentiful rewards from Allah.

Furthermore, staying awake until sunrise enables one to witness the beautiful transition from night to day. It is a reminder of Allah’s majestic creation and His power to bring light to the darkness. Witnessing this natural phenomenon can evoke a sense of gratitude and awe, deepening one’s connection with the Creator.

On a personal note, I have experienced the benefits of staying awake after Fajr prayer until sunrise. The stillness and quietness of the early morning hours create a serene atmosphere conducive to spirituality. I have found that reciting the Qur’an during this time helps me to better comprehend its meanings and strengthens my bond with Allah. It is a time of solitude and self-reflection, allowing me to set positive intentions for the day ahead and seek forgiveness for any shortcomings.

While it is permissible to sleep after Fajr prayer, it is highly recommended to utilize the blessed time before sunrise for acts of worship such as recitation of the Qur’an and engaging in dhikr. This period offers a unique opportunity for spiritual growth, reflection, and connection with Allah. May we all strive to make the most of this precious time and seek His blessings and forgiveness.
