Unlike humans who breathe in and out through their lungs, fish continuously draw water in through their mouths and force it out through their gills, creating a constant flow of water over the gill surfaces. This enables them to extract the oxygen dissolved in the water.
So, can rosy barbs live without oxygen? The simple answer is no. Like all fish, they require oxygen to survive. Without access to oxygen-rich water, they would suffocate and eventually die.
It’s worth noting that fish have different levels of tolerance to low oxygen conditions. Some species, including rosy barbs, are more adaptable and can survive in water with lower oxygen levels compared to other fish species.
