Are armadillos good to have around?

Answered by Stephen Mosley

In my personal experience, armadillos can be both beneficial and, at times, a nuisance to have around. On one hand, these creatures are natural insectivores and can help control populations of insects and other invertebrates in the area. This can be particularly advantageous for those who have gardens or vegetable patches, as armadillos can help keep pests in check without the need for harmful pesticides.

However, there are instances when armadillos can become a source of frustration. Their natural behavior of digging can lead to damage in lawns, golf courses, flower beds, and even vegetable gardens. I remember one time when I had painstakingly planted a beautiful flower bed in my backyard, only to find it torn apart by a curious armadillo searching for food. It was disheartening to see all my hard work go to waste.

Another issue that can arise from armadillo activity is their habit of burrowing. While their burrows may not be particularly deep, they can still cause problems if they are located near structures such as foundations, driveways, or even underground pipes. The digging can weaken the soil and potentially lead to structural damage over time. I have heard stories of armadillos causing cracks in driveways or even creating sinkholes due to their burrowing habits.

In order to address these challenges, it is important to find ways to deter armadillos from causing damage. One possible solution is to install fencing around vulnerable areas to prevent them from accessing gardens or flower beds. However, it’s important to note that armadillos are skilled diggers and may try to burrow under the fence, so burying it at least a foot deep can be helpful.

Additionally, there are various repellents available on the market that claim to deter armadillos. These often utilize strong scents, such as predator urine or garlic, to make the area less appealing to the creatures. However, the effectiveness of these repellents can vary, and it may require some trial and error to find one that works for your specific situation.

While armadillos can be beneficial in terms of their insect-eating habits, they can also be a nuisance when it comes to their digging and burrowing behavior. If you find yourself dealing with armadillo-related damage, it may be necessary to take measures to deter them from causing further harm. However, it’s important to remember that they are still valuable members of the ecosystem and should be treated with respect and consideration.
