When Soldiers wear the APFU as a complete uniform, they will keep the sleeves down on the jacket, the legs down on the pants, and they will tuck the t-shirt inside the trunks. Soldiers may not roll or push up the sleeves of the APFU jacket or long-sleeved shirt.

Can You Wear Army Uniform After Discharge?

A person who is discharged honorably or under honorable conditions from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Space Force may wear his uniform while going from the place of discharge to his home, within three months after his discharge. The wearing of a military uniform is a privilege granted to those who have honorably served in the United States Armed Forces. The specific regulations governing the wearing of uniforms by discharged veterans are contained in Department of Defense Directive 1344.10, “Wearing of Military Uniforms by Members of the Armed Forces Who Are Not on Active Duty.”

According to DOD Directive 1344.10, “a member of the Armed Forces who is discharged honorably or under honorable conditions may wear his or her military uniform while going from the place of discharge to his or her home or other places within the continental United States (CONUS) for a period not to exceed tree months after discharge.” In order to be authorized to wear a military uniform after discharge, a veteran must present his or her separation papers (i.e., DD Form 214, “Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”) to the appropriate authority.

There are certain restrictions on when and where a discharged veteran may wear a military uniform. According to DOD Directive 1344.10, “a member of the Armed Forces who is discharged honorably or under honorable conditions may not wear his or her military uniform while engaged in commercial activity, participating in partisan political activity, or while attending any meeting or demonstration prohibited by law.” Additionally, a discharged veteran “may not wear his or her military uniform at any time that it could be construed as an attempt to influence public opinion in favor of any political cause or candidate.”

Can Retired Military Wear Uniform With Beard?

Yes, retired military can wear a beard while in uniform, but they must conform to the grooming standards of their branch of service. For example, soldiers in the Army may not have beards longer than 1/4 inch, and mustache styles are also regulated.
