Ground-Doves, also known as Common Ground-Doves, are small birds that are known for their unique nesting habits. These doves typically choose to build their nests on the ground, hence their name. However, they are not limited to ground nests and may also utilize above-ground sites for nesting.
When it comes to ground nesting, Common Ground-Doves often select open fields as their preferred nesting sites. These fields provide the necessary space and visibility for the doves to build their nests and raise their young. The nests are typically constructed directly on the ground, often hidden among vegetation or in areas with low ground cover.
In addition to ground nests, Common Ground-Doves may also utilize various above-ground sites for nesting. These include bushes, where they may build nests within the dense foliage for protection and camouflage. Low horizontal tree branches can also serve as suitable nesting sites, providing a slightly elevated platform for the doves to build their nests.
Other above-ground sites favored by Common Ground-Doves include stumps, fence posts, and vines. These provide stable structures for nest building and can often be found in a variety of habitats. Additionally, the doves may choose to nest in more specialized locations such as cornstalks, palm fronds, mangroves, mesquite thickets, and even prickly pear cacti. These unique choices may offer additional protection from predators or help to blend in with the surrounding environment.
It is important to note that the specific choice of nesting site can vary depending on the availability of suitable locations in the doves’ habitat. Factors such as vegetation density, proximity to food sources, and predator avoidance may influence the selection of a nesting site.
In my personal experiences observing Common Ground-Doves, I have often come across their ground nests in open fields or grassy areas. These nests are usually well-hidden and can be challenging to spot unless you are actively looking for them. On occasion, I have also encountered their nests in low bushes or on branches of small trees.
Common Ground-Doves are adaptable birds when it comes to nesting and can utilize a range of both ground and above-ground sites. Their ability to nest in various locations allows them to adapt to different environments and find suitable nesting sites that meet their needs for protection and successful breeding.
