Why is Sonos offline?

Answered by Ricardo McCardle

Sonos can appear as “Offline” in the Sonos app for a few different reasons. Here are some possible explanations:

1. Bluetooth mode: If your Sonos Move is in Bluetooth mode, it will show up as “Offline” in the Sonos app. You can check if it’s in Bluetooth mode by looking at the top LED on the speaker. If it’s blue, that means it’s in Bluetooth mode. To switch back to Wi-Fi mode, press and hold the power button until you hear a tone and see the LED turn green.

2. Power off or asleep: If your Sonos Move is turned off or asleep, it will also appear as “Offline” in the app. Make sure the speaker is powered on by pressing the power button and checking if the LED is lit. If the LED is off, it may be in sleep mode. In this case, try pressing any button on the speaker to wake it up.

3. Out of range of Wi-Fi network: If your Sonos Move is too far away from your Wi-Fi network, it may not be able to connect and will show as “Offline” in the app. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or access point to see if it reconnects. If it does, the status in the app should change to “Online.”

4. Wi-Fi connectivity issues: Sometimes, there may be issues with your Wi-Fi network that can cause the Sonos Move to go offline. Check if other devices on your network are able to connect to the internet. If they are not, there may be a problem with your Wi-Fi network. Restarting your router or contacting your internet service provider for assistance could help resolve this issue.

5. Software updates: Occasionally, Sonos may release software updates that require the speaker to temporarily go offline. During the update process, the speaker will be unavailable and show as “Offline” in the app. Once the update is complete, it should go back online automatically.

To summarize, Sonos can appear as “Offline” in the app when it is in Bluetooth mode, turned off or asleep, out of range of the Wi-Fi network, experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity issues, or undergoing a software update. By checking the LED status, ensuring the speaker is powered on, and troubleshooting your Wi-Fi network, you can help resolve the “Offline” status and get your Sonos Move back online.
