Why is milk coming out of my babies nose and mouth?

Answered by Stephen Mosley

Milk coming out of a baby’s nose and mouth is a common occurrence and is usually caused by reflux. Reflux happens when the milk or stomach contents flow back up into the baby’s esophagus and sometimes even out of their mouth or nose. This can happen due to the immaturity of the baby’s digestive system.

One of the main reasons why milk comes out of a baby’s nose is because the muscles that control the opening between the esophagus and the stomach, called the lower esophageal sphincter, are not fully developed in infants. This allows the milk to easily flow back up into the esophagus and potentially out of the mouth or nose.

In addition to the underdeveloped muscles, babies also have a shorter and more horizontal esophagus compared to adults. This positioning makes it easier for the milk to flow back up, especially when the baby is lying flat or in certain positions.

Reflux is a normal part of a baby’s development and is usually not a cause for concern. In fact, it is estimated that up to 50% of healthy infants experience reflux to some degree.

It is important to note that reflux tends to improve as the baby grows and their digestive system matures. By around 18 months of age, most babies have outgrown this issue.

There are a few ways you can help manage reflux in your baby. Firstly, try feeding your baby in an upright position, as this can help gravity keep the milk in their stomach. Burping your baby frequently during and after feedings can also help release any excess air that may contribute to reflux.

Additionally, keeping your baby upright for about 30 minutes after feeding can help prevent milk from coming back up. You can also consider slightly elevating the head of your baby’s crib or bassinet to further reduce the likelihood of reflux.

If your baby is experiencing severe reflux or is not gaining weight properly, it is important to consult with your pediatrician. They may recommend certain medications or provide further guidance on managing reflux in your baby.
