Why are hippos disappearing?

Answered by Antonio Sutton

I’ve always been fascinated by hippos, and it breaks my heart to see them disappearing. From what I’ve learned, there are several reasons why hippos are facing such a dire situation.

Firstly, hippos are heavily dependent on freshwater systems. They spend a significant amount of their time in rivers and lakes, as they need to submerge themselves in water to regulate their body temperature and protect themselves from the sun. However, these freshwater habitats are under threat.

One major threat to hippos is drought. As climate change continues to wreak havoc on our planet, sub-Saharan Africa is predicted to experience more frequent and severe droughts. This means that the water levels in rivers and lakes can decrease significantly, leaving hippos with limited access to water. Without enough water to submerge themselves in, hippos can suffer from overheating and dehydration, leading to increased mortality rates.

Furthermore, human activities have further exacerbated the water scarcity issue for hippos. Agricultural and industrial water diversions, such as irrigation systems and dams, redirect water away from rivers and lakes. This reduces the available water for hippos and other wildlife, forcing them to compete for limited resources. As a result, hippos may struggle to find adequate water sources and face increased stress and vulnerability to diseases.

In addition to water scarcity, hippos also face habitat loss. They are herbivorous animals and rely on grazing areas near water bodies to feed on grasses and other plants. However, as human populations expand and encroach upon natural habitats, these grazing areas are being converted into agricultural land or urban settlements. This loss of suitable grazing areas further limits the food resources for hippos, leading to malnutrition and decreased birth rates.

The combination of droughts, water diversions, and habitat loss is driving the decline of hippo populations. Climate change projections suggest that these threats will only worsen in the future, making it even more challenging for hippos to survive. Urgent action is needed to mitigate the effects of climate change, protect freshwater ecosystems, and ensure the long-term survival of these magnificent creatures.
