In my personal opinion, I would have to say that Ballito is the better choice between the two. The atmosphere in Ballito is more laid back and relaxed, which is perfect for a beach getaway. The beach itself is absolutely wonderful, with soft sand and clear blue waters. It’s a great place to unwind and soak up the sun.
On the other hand, Umhlanga, particularly near the lighthouse, has a more upbeat and lively vibe. It’s a popular tourist destination, so it can get quite crowded at times. However, if you enjoy a vibrant atmosphere with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops, then Umhlanga might be the better option for you. Just keep in mind that it can be a bit pricey to stay in this area.
If you’re looking for a compromise between the two, I would recommend staying in Salt Rock, which is about a 10-minute drive from Ballito. Salt Rock has a beautiful beach area and a more relaxed atmosphere, similar to Ballito. It’s a great option if you want to enjoy the tranquility of the beach but still have the option to visit Durban, as it’s not too far of a drive.
Both Ballito and Umhlanga have their own unique charm and appeal. It really depends on your personal preferences and what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for. Personally, I would choose Ballito for its laid back vibe and stunning beach, but it’s worth considering all your options and deciding based on what suits you best.
