What is spring and neap tides?

Answered by Robert Flynn

Spring tides and neap tides are natural occurrences in the ocean that are influenced by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. These tides are important in understanding the movement and behavior of the ocean’s water level.

Spring tides occur when the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun align, resulting in higher high tides and lower low tides. This alignment happens during the new moon and full moon phases. During these times, the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun combine, creating a stronger force that causes the water level to rise higher during high tide and drop lower during low tide.

I vividly remember experiencing spring tides during a family vacation at the beach. We arrived during a full moon, and it was fascinating to see how the water level rose significantly higher than usual during high tide. The beach became narrower as the waves crashed closer to the shore, and we had to move our belongings farther back to keep them from getting wet. It was a thrilling experience to witness the power of nature firsthand.

On the other hand, neap tides occur when the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun are at a right angle to each other, resulting in lower high tides and higher low tides. This alignment happens during the first and third quarter moon phases. During these times, the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun counteract each other, causing a weaker force that leads to a smaller difference in water level between high and low tide.

During a neap tide, the water level doesn’t rise as high during high tide and doesn’t drop as low during low tide. This can be observed when visiting the beach during a first or third quarter moon. I recall a time when I went for a walk along the shore during a neap tide. The waves were gentle, and the water seemed calmer compared to the dramatic waves during a spring tide. The beach was wider, and there was more space to relax and enjoy the serenity of the ocean.

Spring tides and neap tides are natural phenomena caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. Spring tides have higher high tides and lower low tides, resulting in a larger difference in water level between high and low tide. Neap tides, on the other hand, have lower high tides and higher low tides, resulting in a smaller difference in water level. These tides play a significant role in shaping the coastal environment and impacting various activities such as surfing, fishing, and beachcombing.
