What are the 3 gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Answered by Jarrod Smith

The three gifts of the Holy Spirit are fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts are often referred to as the gifts of the will, as they direct and strengthen our will in our relationship with God.

1. Fortitude: Fortitude is the gift that gives us the strength and courage to face challenges and difficulties in our faith journey. It helps us to persevere in times of trial and temptation, enabling us to stand firm in our beliefs and convictions. This gift empowers us to overcome fear, to be steadfast in our commitment to God, and to boldly proclaim our faith even in the face of adversity.

Personal experience: I remember a time when I was faced with a difficult decision that required me to go against the popular opinion and stand up for what I believed was right. It was not an easy choice to make, as I knew it would bring criticism and opposition from others. However, through the gift of fortitude, I found the strength and courage to follow my conscience and stay true to my faith.

2. Piety: Piety is the gift that helps us develop a deep reverence and devotion towards God. It cultivates within us a sense of awe and gratitude, leading us to worship and honor God with sincerity and humility. This gift inspires acts of devotion, such as prayer, worship, and acts of charity, and it encourages us to live a life that is pleasing to God.

Personal experience: Growing up, I witnessed the piety of my grandmother, who had a profound love for God. She would spend hours in prayer and often volunteered at the local church. Her piety was contagious, and it had a profound impact on me. Through her example, I learned the importance of developing a personal relationship with God and expressing my love for Him through acts of devotion.

3. Fear of the Lord: Fear of the Lord is the gift that instills in us a deep reverence and awe for God. It is not a fear of punishment or punishment, but rather a fear of offending or displeasing God, whom we recognize as our loving Creator and Father. This gift helps us to recognize God’s greatness, holiness, and power, and it motivates us to live in accordance with His will and commandments.

Personal experience: I have experienced the fear of the Lord in moments of deep reflection and prayer. When I contemplate the magnitude of God’s love and mercy, as well as His justice and holiness, I am filled with a sense of awe and reverence. This fear of the Lord prompts me to examine my actions and motives, ensuring that they align with God’s will and seeking His forgiveness when I fall short.

The three gifts of the Holy Spirit – fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord – direct and strengthen our will in our relationship with God. They empower us to face challenges with courage, cultivate a deep reverence and devotion towards God, and inspire us to live in accordance with His will. These gifts are essential in nurturing our spiritual growth and deepening our connection with God.
