The story of Telegonus begins after Odysseus’ return from the Trojan War. After a long voyage, he finally arrived at home only to find that his wife Penelope had been besieged by suitors who wished to take her as their own. Telegonus grew up on on Aeaea under the tutelage of his mother, learning her magical arts and eventually becoming an accomplished wizard himself. But he also had an urge to find his father and so when he came of age, he set sail with a crew of likeminded adventurers in search of Odysseus.
Unfortunately, what they found was not what they expected. When they reached Ithaca they found Odysseus but it was too late – Telegonus had unknowingly killed his own father with the enchanted spear given to him by Circe before departing on his quest.
Telegonus brought back Odysseus’ body to Circe who then transformed him into a spirit and placed him in the Underworld where he could be reunited with Penelope for all eternity. Although Telegonus’ actions were unintentional, it still weighed heavily upon him and from then on he became known as “the Mourner”.
In regards to Telegonus’ status as a god or demigod; there is some debate among scholars as to whether or not this was ever officially established within the realm of Greek Mythology or if it is simply an interpretation made by modern readers due to the tragic nature of Telegonus’ story.
