Rentzel was born in 1943 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he excelled as a wide receiver, leading the nation in both receptions and receiving yards during his senior season. After being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1965 NFL draft, he began his professional career with the team that year. Following three seasons with Minnesota, he was traded to Dallas for running back Don Perkins in 1968.

In Dallas, Rentzel quickly became an integral part of their offense and was selected to two Pro Bowls while helping lead them to Super Bowl V. In 1971, Rentzel’s tenure with Dallas ended abruptly when he was suspended by then-commissioner Pete Rozelle after being arrested on indecent exposure charges. Following his suspension, Rentzel finished out his career with two seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before retiring after 1973.

In retirement, Rentzel turned his attention to business pursuits and worked as an executive at multiple major companies across various industries throughout his life. He passed away at age 75 on August 26th, 2018 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
