Many people may argue that WAN optimization is no longer necessary because of the increasing popularity of SD-WAN, which promises to simplify and optimize wide area networking. While SD-WAN does offer some built-in optimization features, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
The truth is, there is still a significant amount of MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) business around. Many enterprises, especially larger ones, have invested heavily in MPLS networks and still rely on them for their critical applications and data. These networks often span across multiple locations, and WAN optimization plays a crucial role in ensuring efficient and reliable connectivity.
However, it is important to note that WAN optimization technology has evolved over the years. It is no longer just about improving network performance through compression and caching techniques. Modern WAN optimization solutions offer a wide range of features and capabilities to address the challenges of today’s networks.
For example, advanced WAN optimization solutions can now prioritize and optimize traffic based on application requirements. They can dynamically adjust network parameters to ensure the best performance for specific applications.
