Is Golisopod good competitively?

Answered by Douglas Hiatt

Golisopod is indeed a strong and viable choice in competitive play, specifically in the RU tier. Its unique ability, Emergency Exit, allows it to switch out when its HP drops below 50%, which can be both a blessing and a curse. This ability can be strategically utilized to maintain Golisopod’s longevity and ensure it is always available to revenge kill threats.

One of Golisopod’s biggest strengths is its access to the move First Impression. This move gives Golisopod a priority STAB move with a base power of 90, allowing it to hit hard and potentially take out weakened opponents before they have a chance to retaliate. This is particularly useful for picking off threats that may have caused trouble for your team, such as Virizion, Barbaracle, and Metagross.

In addition to First Impression, Golisopod has a wide movepool that allows for versatility in its sets. It can run powerful physical moves like Liquidation, Leech Life, and Aqua Jet, which further enhance its offensive presence. Furthermore, Golisopod can also utilize moves like Swords Dance to boost its Attack stat and become an even more formidable threat.

However, Golisopod does have its weaknesses. Its low base Speed stat leaves it susceptible to being outsped and KOed by faster opponents. Additionally, its reliance on Emergency Exit means that it can be forced to switch out even when it may be advantageous to stay in and continue dealing damage. This can disrupt momentum and potentially give the opponent a chance to set up or switch in a counter.

When using Golisopod competitively, it is important to carefully consider team composition and support. Providing Golisopod with entry hazard support, such as Stealth Rock or Spikes, can help weaken opponents and make it easier for Golisopod to secure KO’s with First Impression. Additionally, having Pokemon with U-turn or Volt Switch on the team can allow for safe switches and maintain offensive momentum.

In my personal experience, Golisopod has been a valuable asset on my RU teams. Its ability to revenge kill threats and hit hard with First Impression has proven to be crucial in many battles. However, it is important to play strategically and be mindful of Golisopod’s weaknesses to ensure its success. Golisopod is definitely a strong and viable choice in competitive play, but it requires careful team building and playstyle to fully utilize its potential.
