Is candytuft the same as alyssum?

Answered by Jeremy Urbaniak

Candytuft is not the same as alyssum. While they may share some similarities, they are actually two different plants belonging to different genera.

Candytuft, scientifically known as Iberis, is a flowering plant that is native to Europe and Asia. It is commonly grown as an ornamental plant in gardens due to its attractive clusters of flowers. The most common variety of candytuft is the white one, but there are also purple, lavender, and crimson varieties available. The clusters of flowers in candytuft are relatively larger compared to those of alyssum.

On the other hand, alyssum, scientifically known as Lobularia, is another flowering plant that is also widely cultivated for its beautiful blooms. Alyssum is native to the Mediterranean region and is known for its delicate and fragrant flowers. The flowers of alyssum are smaller compared to candytuft and are arranged in smaller clusters. Alyssum also has a longer blooming season compared to candytuft.

So, while candytuft and alyssum may look somewhat similar at first glance, they can be distinguished by the size and arrangement of their flower clusters. Candytuft has larger clusters of flowers and a shorter blooming season, while alyssum has smaller clusters and a longer blooming season.

In my personal experience as a gardener, I have grown both candytuft and alyssum in my garden. I have found that candytuft adds a bold and vibrant touch to flower beds and borders with its larger clusters of flowers. Alyssum, on the other hand, is perfect for adding a delicate and fragrant touch to hanging baskets or as a ground cover in sunny areas. Both plants are relatively easy to grow and care for, making them popular choices among gardeners.

Candytuft and alyssum are two different plants with distinct characteristics. While they may share some similarities in terms of their flowers, they can be differentiated by the size and arrangement of their clusters. Both plants have their own unique beauty and are worth considering for adding color and charm to your garden.
