Is an IPA better in the can or in a glass?

Based on my personal experience and observations, I would say that an IPA is definitely better when poured into a glass rather than consumed straight from the can. Here’s why:

1. Aroma Enhancement: When you pour an IPA into a glass, especially an IPA-specific glass like the one I used, it really enhances the aroma of the beer. The narrow opening of the glass allows the aromas to concentrate and makes it easier to perceive the different nuances. In comparison, drinking from a can restricts the aroma from fully developing and can diminish the overall sensory experience.

2. Pronounced Citrus Hops: One noticeable difference between drinking from a glass and drinking from a can was the intensity of the citrus hop aroma. In the IPA glass, the citrus hops were much more pronounced and vibrant, which added an extra layer of enjoyment to the beer. This enhanced aroma is likely due to the shape of the glass, which allows the volatile compounds in the hops to be concentrated near the opening and make them more noticeable.

3. Improved Taste: The IPA glass also enhanced the taste of the beer. The juicy hop flavors were much more apparent and pronounced when drinking from the glass. This could be because the glass allows for better aeration, allowing the flavors to fully develop and be perceived by the taste buds. In contrast, drinking from a can might result in a slightly muted taste experience.

4. Carbonation and Mouthfeel: Another aspect where the IPA glass outperformed the can was in the presentation of carbonation. The glass showcased more carbonation bubbles, which added to the visual appeal of the beer. Additionally, this increased carbonation was also noticeable in the mouthfeel, making the beer feel livelier and more effervescent on the palate. Drinking straight from the can might not provide the same level of carbonation and mouthfeel.

Based on my personal experience, I would highly recommend pouring an IPA into a glass to fully appreciate its aroma, taste, and carbonation. The IPA-specific glass, in particular, can greatly enhance the overall sensory experience and bring out the best in the beer. Give it a try and see if you notice the difference for yourself!
