Does KT Tape work for shin splints?

Answered by James Kissner

I have personally used KT Tape for shin splints and I can say that it has been quite effective for me. Shin splints can be a painful and frustrating condition, but using KT Tape has helped alleviate some of the discomfort and allowed me to continue my activities without as much pain.

When applying KT Tape for shin splints, it’s important to be careful not to touch the adhesive on the tape and only handle the tape with the paper backing. This helps to ensure that the tape sticks properly and doesn’t lose its adhesive properties.

To apply the tape, I first clean and dry the affected area. Then, I tear off a strip of tape long enough to cover the area from just below my knee to the top of my ankle. I then round the edges of the tape to prevent it from peeling off easily.

Next, I apply the tape along the outside of my shin, starting just below my knee and working my way down to the top of my ankle. I make sure to apply the tape with a slight stretch, but not too tight, as I want it to provide support without restricting blood flow.

Once the tape is applied, I gently rub it to activate the adhesive and ensure it sticks well. I find that the tape usually stays in place for several days, even with showering and sweating during activities.

I have found that KT Tape provides a supportive and stabilizing effect to the shin area, which helps to reduce pain and inflammation associated with shin splints. It also provides a gentle compression that can help improve blood flow and reduce swelling.

However, it’s important to note that KT Tape is not a cure-all for shin splints. It can provide temporary relief and support, but it’s also important to address the underlying causes of shin splints, such as overuse or improper running form.

In addition to using KT Tape, I have also found that incorporating rest, ice, stretching, and strengthening exercises into my routine has been beneficial in managing shin splints. It’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional or physical therapist for a proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plan for shin splints.

Based on my personal experience, I believe that KT Tape can be effective in providing temporary relief and support for shin splints. However, it’s important to use it in conjunction with other treatment methods and to address the underlying causes of shin splints for long-term management.
