Finches can be tamed, but it’s important to note that not all finches are equally receptive to taming. In my personal experience and from what I have gathered from other finch owners, canaries and green singing finches tend to be the best candidates for taming.
I have always been fascinated by birds, and when I decided to get finches as pets, I was determined to try and tame them. I did a lot of research and spoke to other finch owners to gather tips and advice. It seemed that canaries and green singing finches were the most commonly mentioned when it came to taming success stories.
I started by making sure my finches had a comfortable and spacious cage with plenty of toys and perches. I wanted them to feel secure and happy in their environment. I also made sure to spend time near the cage, talking softly to them and getting them accustomed to my presence.
The next step was to offer them treats from my hand. I started with small pieces of fresh fruits and vegetables, which I would hold just outside the cage door. At first, they were hesitant, but eventually, they grew curious and would cautiously approach my hand to grab the treat. This was a small but significant step towards building trust.
Over time, I gradually moved the treats closer to the inside of the cage, allowing the finches to come closer to me. Eventually, they became comfortable enough to eat from my hand while I held it inside the cage. This was a breakthrough moment for me, as it showed that they were beginning to associate me with positive experiences.
To further strengthen our bond, I started offering them treats while gently stroking their feathers. This required a lot of patience and a gentle touch, as finches are delicate birds. It took some time, but eventually, they became more comfortable with the physical contact and even seemed to enjoy the gentle petting.
It’s important to note that taming finches is a gradual process and requires a lot of patience. Some finches may never become fully tame, and that’s okay. Each bird has its own personality and comfort level. However, with consistent effort and a gentle approach, it is possible to build a trusting relationship with these small birds.
While not all finches can be easily tamed, canaries and green singing finches have shown to be more receptive to taming efforts. With a comfortable environment, patience, and a gentle approach, it is possible to build a trusting relationship with these birds.
