Can cichlids live with goldfish?

Answered by Robert Dupre

In my experience, I have found that cichlids and goldfish are not compatible tank mates. Let me explain the reasons behind this.

Firstly, as mentioned earlier, cichlids are tropical fish and require temperatures between 24 – 30 °C to thrive. On the other hand, goldfish are coldwater fish and prefer temperatures around 18 – 23 °C. This difference in optimal temperature range is quite significant and can cause stress or even health issues for both types of fish if they are kept together in the same tank.

Moreover, cichlids are known to be relatively aggressive fish, especially when it comes to defending their territory or breeding. They can become territorial and may exhibit aggressive behavior towards other fish, including goldfish. Goldfish, on the other hand, are generally peaceful and do not have the same aggressive tendencies as cichlids. This difference in temperament can lead to conflicts and potential harm to either fish.

Additionally, cichlids and goldfish have different dietary requirements. Cichlids are omnivorous and require a varied diet consisting of both plant matter and protein-rich foods. Goldfish, on the other hand, are primarily herbivorous and thrive on a diet rich in plant matter. Feeding these two types of fish together can be challenging as their nutritional needs differ significantly.

Furthermore, cichlids and goldfish have different habitat preferences. Cichlids are often found in freshwater lakes and rivers with rocky or sandy substrates and plenty of hiding spots. On the contrary, goldfish prefer ponds or larger bodies of water with ample space to swim and explore. Providing a suitable environment that meets the requirements of both fish can be quite challenging in a typical home aquarium, further emphasizing their incompatibility.

Based on my personal experiences and knowledge, it is not advisable to keep cichlids and goldfish together in the same tank. The differences in optimal temperature, aggression levels, dietary needs, and habitat preferences make them incompatible tank mates. It is important to consider the well-being and health of the fish when setting up a tank, and providing suitable conditions for each species individually is the best approach.
