Are there plovers in Florida?

Answered by James Kissner

There are indeed plovers in Florida! In fact, one of the most common and widespread plover species found in the state is the Killdeer. I have had the pleasure of encountering these beautiful birds during my visits to various parts of Florida.

The Killdeer, which derives its name from the distinctive call it makes, can be found in a variety of habitats throughout the state. Range maps indicate that Killdeer can be found all across the United States, and Florida is no exception. These birds have adapted well to both natural and man-made environments, making them quite versatile in their choice of habitat.

During my observations, I have noticed that Killdeer are particularly abundant in open areas such as fields, meadows, and even golf courses. They can also be found near bodies of water, such as ponds, lakes, and marshes. These areas provide them with ample opportunities to find their preferred food sources, which mainly consist of insects, worms, and other small invertebrates.

One of the fascinating aspects of Killdeer is their distinctive call, which sounds like they are repeating their own name – “Killdeer, Killdeer, Killdeer.” It is a loud and distinctive call that can often be heard before the bird is even seen. This call serves various purposes, including communication between individuals, defending territory, and warning of potential threats.

In terms of appearance, Killdeer are medium-sized birds with a brownish upper body and a white underbody. They have a distinctive double breast band that is black on top and white below. This characteristic marking helps to distinguish them from other plover species found in Florida.

Another interesting behavior exhibited by Killdeer is their “broken-wing” display. When they feel threatened, especially when their nest or young are nearby, they may feign injury to distract potential predators and lead them away from their vulnerable offspring. It is quite a remarkable sight to see a seemingly injured bird fluttering away, only to suddenly heal and fly off once the threat has been lured away.

The Killdeer is a fascinating and common plover species found in Florida. Their widespread distribution and adaptability to various habitats make them easily observable in many parts of the state. If you ever find yourself in Florida, keep an eye out for these charming birds and listen for their distinctive “Killdeer” call – you won’t be disappointed!
