There are indeed falcons in Ohio. In fact, there are three species of falcons that are likely to be seen in the state. These magnificent birds are known for their bullet-like heads, short necks, pointed wings, and long tails. Their sleek and streamlined bodies are perfectly designed for swift and agile flight.
One of the falcon species commonly found in Ohio is the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus). These birds are renowned for their incredible speed and are considered the fastest animals in the world. They have been recorded diving at speeds of over 240 miles per hour when hunting their prey. Peregrine Falcons typically inhabit open habitats such as cliffs, tall buildings, and bridges, where they can easily spot and pursue their favorite food source, other birds.
Another species of falcon that can be spotted in Ohio is the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius). These small but mighty falcons are often seen perched on telephone wires or hovering above open fields and grasslands. The American Kestrel is known for its colorful plumage, with males sporting a combination of blue-gray wings, rusty-red back, and a distinct black vertical stripe on their face. Females, on the other hand, have a more brownish coloration. These falcons feed primarily on insects, small mammals, and occasionally small birds.
The third falcon species that may be encountered in Ohio is the Merlin (Falco columbarius). Merlins are similar in appearance to the American Kestrel but slightly larger. They have a dark grayish-brown back and wings, with a lighter-colored breast. Merlins are often found in open woodlands, fields, and marshes, where they hunt birds in flight. They are known for their agility and acrobatic flight, often performing impressive aerial maneuvers while pursuing their prey.
When observing these falcons in Ohio, you may notice that their wingtips usually reach more than halfway down their tails when they are perched. This is a distinguishing feature of falcons and helps to differentiate them from other similar birds of prey.
Throughout my own experiences birdwatching in Ohio, I have been fortunate enough to witness the incredible speed and aerial prowess of falcons firsthand. It is truly a remarkable sight to see these birds soaring through the sky and chasing down their prey with such precision and skill.
