Green basilisk lizards, also known as Jesus Christ lizards, are not poisonous. They belong to the family Corytophanidae and are primarily found in Central America. These lizards are famous for their remarkable ability to run on the surface of water, giving them their nickname.
One distinguishing characteristic of green basilisks is their large and long bodies. They have a sleek and streamlined appearance, which helps them move swiftly both on land and in water. Their bodies are also compressed laterally, meaning they are flattened from side to side, allowing them to navigate through dense vegetation with ease.
Another notable feature, particularly in males, is a fleshy crest that runs from the head to the neck. This crest can be raised or lowered depending on the lizard’s mood or the situation. It adds to their overall striking appearance and can be used for communication or courtship displays.
While green basilisks are visually impressive, they do not possess any venom or poison. Their primary defense mechanism is their agility and ability to escape predators by running on water or seeking refuge in trees and vegetation. They rely on their speed and camouflage to evade danger rather than relying on toxins.
In terms of behavior, green basilisks are diurnal and arboreal. They are commonly found near bodies of water, such as streams or rivers, where they can easily escape into the safety of the trees if needed. These lizards are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of small invertebrates like insects, spiders, and small crustaceans.
In my personal experience, I have had the opportunity to observe green basilisks in their natural habitat during a trip to Costa Rica. It was fascinating to witness their incredible ability to run across the water’s surface. Seeing them leap from a branch and effortlessly glide on the water was truly remarkable.
Green basilisk lizards, also known as Jesus Christ lizards, are not poisonous. They are characterized by their large and long bodies, compressed tails, and, in males, a fleshy crest. Their agility and ability to run on water make them unique, but they do not possess any venom or poison. These lizards rely on their speed and agility to evade predators and primarily feed on insects.
