Headaches are common after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery. In fact, the incidence of preoperative headaches in patients undergoing ACDF is quite high. In the study we conducted, we found that 88% of patients reported experiencing headaches before the surgery. This is consistent with previously reported incidences of 86.2%.
Furthermore, not only are headaches common after ACDF, but they can also be quite severe. In our study, we found that 52% of patients reported experiencing severe headaches (as measured by a Neck Disability Index score of 3–5) prior to the surgery. Again, this aligns closely with the previously reported incidence of 52.1%.
These findings suggest that headaches are a significant issue for many patients who undergo ACDF surgery. The reasons for the high incidence of headaches in this population are not fully understood, but there are several possible explanations. One theory is that the surgery itself may cause inflammation and irritation of the surrounding tissues, leading to headaches. Another possibility is that the underlying cervical spine pathology that necessitated the surgery may contribute to headache development.
It is important to note that while headaches are common before ACDF surgery, they do not always persist after the procedure. Some patients may experience relief from their headaches following surgery, especially if the underlying cause of the headaches was related to the cervical spine pathology that was addressed during the ACDF. However, it is also possible that headaches may persist or even worsen after surgery.
Managing postoperative headaches after ACDF can be challenging. Treatment options may vary depending on the underlying cause of the headaches and the individual patient’s circumstances. Non-surgical interventions such as medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications may be recommended. In some cases, additional surgical interventions may be necessary to address any ongoing issues that are contributing to the headaches.
Headaches are indeed common after ACDF surgery, with a high preoperative incidence reported in multiple studies. These headaches can be severe and may persist or worsen after surgery. Proper evaluation and management of headaches in patients undergoing ACDF is important to ensure optimal outcomes and patient satisfaction.
