Is our life a gift from God?

Answered by Robert Flynn

Our life is indeed a gift from God. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that eternal life is a free gift given to us by God through Jesus Christ. Romans 6:23 states, “The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This verse explicitly declares that eternal life is not something we earn or deserve, but rather it is freely given to us by God.

Ephesians 2:8 further reinforces this truth by stating, “By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Here, the apostle Paul emphasizes that our salvation and eternal life are entirely dependent on God’s grace and not on our own efforts or merits. It is a gift that we receive through faith, and we cannot boast in our own achievements.

In Revelations 22:17, we are invited to partake in the water of life without cost. This invitation signifies that God freely offers us the opportunity to receive eternal life without any payment or requirement on our part. It is a gift that is available to all who are willing to accept it.

The concept of life being a gift from God is not only found in these specific verses but is woven throughout the entire Bible. From the very beginning, God created human beings in His image and breathed life into them (Genesis 1:27, 2:7). The very fact that we exist and have the capacity to experience life is a testament to God’s gracious gift.

Additionally, personal experiences and situations can also illustrate the truth that life is a gift from God. Many individuals have faced near-death experiences or have witnessed miraculous interventions that have reminded them of the preciousness and fragility of life. These encounters often lead to a deeper appreciation for the gift of life and a recognition that it is not something we can take for granted.

The Bible unequivocally declares that our life is a gift from God. The gift of eternal life is freely given to us through Jesus Christ, and we receive it by God’s grace through faith. This truth is not only conveyed through Scripture but can also be affirmed through personal experiences and reflections on the preciousness of life. Let us embrace this gift with gratitude and seek to live a life that honors the giver of life.
