The enormous energy released by the earthquake resulted in waves that reached heights of up to 30 meters (98 feet) in some areas, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of over 230,000 people in 14 countries.

For instance, underwater landslides, volcanic eruptions, or even large meteorite strikes can displace water and generate tsunamis.
