What if I have a UTI and I’m breastfeeding?

Answered by Jeremy Urbaniak

If you have a urinary tract infection (UTI) and you are breastfeeding, it is safe to continue breastfeeding your baby. In fact, breastfeeding can actually help to prevent UTIs by promoting good urinary hygiene.

However, it is important to take care of yourself and seek treatment for your UTI to prevent the infection from worsening or spreading to other parts of your body. Here are some steps you can take:

1. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids is important for flushing out bacteria from your urinary tract. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water or other non-caffeinated beverages throughout the day.

2. Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands before and after breastfeeding or changing diapers to prevent the spread of bacteria. Additionally, make sure to keep your genital area clean and dry.

3. Follow treatment guidelines: UTIs are typically treated with antibiotics. It is important to complete the full course of antibiotics prescribed by your healthcare provider, even if you start feeling better. This helps to ensure that the infection is completely cleared from your system.

4. Take pain relief if needed: UTIs can cause discomfort, such as pain or burning during urination. If you are experiencing pain, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as long as they are deemed safe by your healthcare provider.

5. Avoid irritants: Certain substances can irritate the urinary tract and worsen UTI symptoms. It is best to avoid caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods while you have a UTI.

6. Rest and take care of yourself: UTIs can be tiring and uncomfortable, so make sure to get plenty of rest and take care of yourself. Try to get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, and manage stress as much as possible.

It is also important to reach out to your healthcare provider if your symptoms worsen or do not improve after a few days of treatment. They may need to adjust your medication or further evaluate your condition.

In my personal experience, I had a UTI while breastfeeding my youngest child. I followed the steps mentioned above and continued to breastfeed. With proper treatment and care, the infection cleared up, and there were no negative effects on my baby or breastfeeding journey. Remember, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance.
